I’m a geek/nerd and a tech-head, someone with a passionate interest in technology. Ever since I was a teenager, one of my hobbies was (and is) building computers from the ground up (or, lately, adding to the store-bought computers) as well as fixing them. So I’m always admiring the latest desktop computer cases/towers, especially those that look really sleek or have colorful LED lights.
Recently I was browsing through some news on my smartphone and came across an advertisement (shown here in the first picture). It showed a very sleek-looking computer case. OOH! Purr. Drool! I ogled over it like one would over a magazine’s centerfold. Beautiful, curvy, bold lines, sooo high-tech, futuristic-looking. Wooow! I had never seen a computer case like that. I knew it must cost a pretty penny but I wanted to learn everything about it — its specs, what’s inside it, what’s on its back, and its cost. I had never heard of the company or model name before, so I figured it must be one of those newfangled computer companies popping up lately.

So I eagerly tapped on the advertisement and it took me to a website. It was an advertisement for…
A. Freaking. Boat. Motor.
Like a famous cartoon character would say: D’OH!!!
Obviously, it was the advertiser’s intention to have the bottom half of the motor cropped to make it not look like a motor. The motor itself is HUGE, about four feet tall. In the advertisement, as you can see, there is absolutely no sense of size. Whether or not it’s intentional, it was deceptive, especially to those like me who aren’t seafarers (despite the fact that I live on an island)!
After feeling disappointed, foolish, and miffed, I have come to love that advertisement. It has popped up several times since and I’d grin at it each time. In my opinion, it’s clever. And very inspirational! We at Deaf Blue Cats strive to create marketing and advertisements, for ourselves and for our clients, that are as eye-catching and/or clever enough to attract potential customers.
